In all countries, poverty presents a chronic stress for children and families that may interfere with school achievement. In the US, the link between poverty and low academic achievement has been well established. Research has shown that children in families that live in poverty have lower cognitive and academic performance and more behavior problems than children who are not exposed to poverty partially because of a lack of stimulating behaviors and home experiences among low-income families. For many children who do attend school they receive an inadequate education because of poorly trained, underpaid teachers, overcrowded classrooms, and a lack of basic teaching tools such as textbooks, blackboards, and pens and paper. In many poor countries, the government lacks the financial resources to meet their citizen's educational needs. Because basic education is a recognized entitlement and society benefits when children are educated, the state should bear the cost, especially for poor children.
On day 4, the teacher will introduce this new topic of poverty and how it affects the education systems in the United states and in the Developing Countries. Teachers can refer to this link to understand the effects of poverty to be able to teach it to their students. Students will brainstorm ideas on how they believe the educational systems are being affected because of poverty. The students will then create a diagram to compare and contrast how the educational systems are affected in the Untied States vs. the Developing Countries. The teacher will check each of the students diagrams and once they have finished, they will make sure they have enough similarities and differences for the two topics. Once the teacher has checked the students work, the student will write a two paragraph paper describing poverty and education in the two different regions. In this lesson students will be able to either type their paragraphs or write them depending on what they wish to do. At the end of this lesson, students will be able to distinguish the differences between ways that the education systems are affected in the United States and ways that the education systems are affected in Developing Countries.
